Joik concert Jokkmokk's Winter market 2026

Juhán Niila Stålka presents a concert with joik and storytelling in Jokkmokk's Old Church. Juhán Niila Stålka is a young Lula Sami yojkare and storyteller from Jokkmokk. He works with traditional yojkas passed down through generations within his family, combined with stories that place them in a contemporary context. His performances focus on people, places and experiences connected to the Stora Lule river and the Jokkmokks area. Joik is a Sami indigenous tradition and an important part of the Sami intangible cultural heritage. Instead of singing about something, jojk expresses the essence of a person, place, animal or feeling. It's a living tradition that has been passed down orally through generations. Gamla Jokkmokk is a historic timber church in the heart of the market area. For a long time joik was forbidden, especially in churches. Yoyking in this place still carries a historical thrill. The acoustics of the church make it a powerful environment to experience yoke. This concert gives you a unique opportunity to experience jojk, storytelling and Sami culture in a place where it was once silenced.
