Step into my låvdågoahtte, a traditional Sámi tent, and immerse yourself in the living cultural heritage of Sápmi. I invite you to sit on soft reindeer pelts, taste dried reindeer meat, and enjoy freshly brewed coffee prepared in the traditional way. This experience offers more than a glimpse into Sámi culture—it is a journey into the indigenous storytelling traditions of the Sámi people. You will learn about joik, our ancient singing tradition that conveys emotions and paints vivid pictures with melody. When words fall short, we joik to express the essence of a person, an animal, or a landscape. With years of experience as a sámi guide, I share personal anecdotes from Sápmi, insights into Sámi customs and traditions, all woven together by the joik melodies of the people, mountains, and animals from the area around Jokkmokk. A central part of this experience is the opportunity to ask questions, making each event unique and shaped by your curiosity.\ \ My hope is that you leave with a richer understanding of our indigenous values, a deeper connection to nature, and a more nuanced picture of the Sámi people in the modern world. About\ This is a performance where Juhán Niila Stålka and Jasmine Skog will interpret stories from Jokkmokk thorugh traditional sámi joiking and contemporary dance. They will bring the stories about the people, mountains and animals from Jokkmokk to life through movement and sound. The name Bådtselit is julevsámi for the action of an animal shaking its body, and the stories about the animals will be a reaccuring theme throughout the performance.\ \ You will also get the opportunity to ask questions about sámi culture and try some dried reindeer meat.\ \ Location Outside in Ájtte Fjällträdgård (The Alpine Garden) Jokkmokk’s Alpine Garden, or Jokkmokks Fjällträdgård, is a unique botanical garden. It showcases a diverse collection of alpine and subarctic plants, offering a glimpse into the rich flora of the region. The garden is designed to educate visitors about the native plant species and their adaptations to the harsh Arctic climate. Visitors can explore various themed sections, including rock gardens, wetland areas, and traditional Sami plantings, making it a serene and educational destination for nature enthusiasts and anyone interested in the natural beauty of the Arctic environment.\ **\ Juhán Niila Stålka** Juhán Niila is a storyteller and joiker. He weaves together old stories from around Jokkmokk with contemporary issues such as colonization and climate change. Always with a sparkle in his eyes he mixes humour and seriousness in an elgant way.\ \ Jasmine Skog Jasmine is a dancer and choreographer from Jokkmokk with a versatile dance education from Danscenter in Stockholm. Jokkmokk is a place where nature and culture are tied together, and this is where she finds her greatest source of inspiration.
